State, local authorities patrol highways for the holidays

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - According to the American Automobile Association, 42.5 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Wednesday and Sunday. Ninety percent will travel by car.

When drivers head out for the holiday roughly 600,000 South Carolina drivers will be sharing the road.

The state highway patrol says extra officers will be on the roadways looking for aggressive drivers.

Troopers say to take your time as you hit the road.

"The tips we want to give drivers is number one be patient. Plan your destination, plan your travel routes and know where you are going," Capt. Chris Williamson said."Be patient and drive defensively and be looking out for the next driver so that you can avoid collisions."

Highway patrol along with other law enforcement agencies plan to have check points to enforce all traffic laws and to make sure no one is drinking and driving.
