SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Kindergartners at Spann Elementary School in Summerville are inviting less fortunate kids to take a walk in their shoes...literally. They are donating the shoes that they've outgrown to an charity known as Soles 4 Souls.
Soles 4Souls is an international charity that's been operating since 2005. In that time they have collected more than 12 million pairs of shoes.
Christine Rogers-Berry describes the shoe collection effort as a wonderful service project.
"You collect gently used shoes. They get sent to places throughout the world like Haiti where they've had the hurricanes, the issues where the children don't have anything on their feet. Very dangerous. The children get cuts on their feet, they get ill, very dangerous" said Rogers-Berry.
Rogers-Berry says her class has truly gotten behind the effort. In several weeks time the five kindergarten classes at Spann donated around 500 pairs of shoes. The teachers say its an opportunity to demonstrate humanity and it doesn't cost them a thing.
"I think they see that they're having something invested in what's going on."
