Report: Energy drink related ER visits up 10 fold

(CNN) - A government report shows more people are winding up in the emergency room after drinking energy drinks.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says between 2005 and 2009, ER visits climbed from just over 1,100 to more than 13,000. That's a 10-fold increase in just four years.

About 44 percent of the visits came after people mixed the drinks with alcohol or drugs.

The beverage industry says the figures are taken out of context and that energy drinks are safe.
