Coroner: Man killed after hitting parked cars in Goose Creek

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - A 24-year-old man died Monday morning after striking two parked cars with his vehicle on Cherry Hill Avenue in Goose Creek, authorities say.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says Matthew Zayac was pronounced dead at MUSC at 4:27 a.m.  Goose Creek Police Department officers responded to the scene of the wreck at 12:40 a.m. in the area of 130 Cherry Hill Ave.

According to investigators, a 1991 Honda Accord driven by Zayac had been traveling north on Cherry Hill Avenue and left the roadway where it struck two cars parked in the driveway of 130 Cherry Hill Ave.

Police say the vehicle driven by Zayac was extensively damaged and Zayac had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters.

Zayac received multiple injuries and died at MUSC several hours later.

Also in the vehicle was a 21-year-old man who suffered a broken hip and leg. Authorities say 22-year-old Claude Hyman was also in the vehicle and was taken into custody on an outstanding bench warrant for drug paraphernalia possession.

According to the Goose Creek Police Department, preliminary indications suggest that both alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors in the collision.

The accident is still under investigation by the Goose Creek Police Department.
