CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The federal government has awarded more than $10 million so researchers in South Carolina can study how oxidants stress the body and cause disease.

The money is being used by the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and the South Carolina College of Pharmacy. The money comes from the National Institutes of Health and will be used for five research projects.

Researchers say oxidants and the resulting stress on the body can cause cell injury, leading to cancer, diabetes and diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
