IOWA CITY, IA (KWWL/CNN) – An officer's dashcam video and a tip from Crimestoppers helped put a University of Iowa student in jail for attempted murder, after nearly choking an officer to death.
The alleged attack happened the morning hours of Nov. 18. Police say the officer spotted Branden Plummer disrupting traffic by standing in the street.
"This individual was strangling the officer - the officer had lost consciousness at one point - and was banging his head against the cement," said police officer Denise Brotherton.
The officer reportedly asked Plummer for his ID, but the student refused to show him. The two got into a scuffle after a foot chase and that's when police say Plummer went on the attack.
The officer was treated at a hospital and released. He has since returned to full duty.
If convicted, Plummer faces up to 25 years in prison.
