Auto parts store catches fire in Ladson; Owner suspects arson

LADSON, SC (WCSC) - The owner of an auto shop near Ladson says someone set his business on fire Thursday night. Firefighters were called out to the business around 11 p.m. to put out the blaze.

The fire broke out on Highway 78 at Johnson's Used Auto Parts. Firefighters got the flames under control quickly. There is no official word on how it started.

Charleston County sheriff's deputies also responded to the fire. C&B firefighters extinguished the fire, which was burning at the front of the structure.

The blaze which melted the structure siding was extinguished before it spread to the rest of the building. The estimated damage the the building was approximately $5,000.

A window was broken out of the front of the business, even though owner Ike Huntley says he parked his car in front of the shop overnight. He says he does that every night to deter crime.

Huntley says despite efforts to avoid crime, it is rampant in the area.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
