Senior Citizens evacuated after downtown Charleston fire

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Dozens of firefighters are wrapping up after working to clear the smoke after a fire early Friday morning at the Ansonborough House in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston Fire Department says the fire started a little after 5 a.m. Friday in a single room of the apartment complex for senior citizens.

The fire was quickly put out, but residents were evacuated as a precaution. They were taken to a nearby fire station, which was used as a shelter to get them out of the cold weather.

There are reports that one person was taken to the hospital with a slight burn injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

All streets have been reopened.
