Goaltender Daren Machesney made 22 saves and defenseman Zach Tarkir scored in the sixth round of the shootout to give the South Carolina Stingrays (14-9-0-1) a 3-2 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (10-8-5-3) at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Sunday afternoon.
The Gladiators opened the scoring 17 seconds into the contest when forward Joey Haddad lifted a shot over the blocker of Machesney from the left-wing circle. Forward Tyler Murovich and defenseman Dallas Jackson added assists. Stingrays defenseman Nick Tabisz tied the contest at 14:58 burying a rebound off the left pad of Gladiators netminder Jeff Jakaitis (L, 33 saves on 35 shots). Forward Sean Dolan recorded the lone assist.
Stingrays forward Trent Campbell made it 2-1 at 11:34 of third period slapping a pass from forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien past the glove of Jakaitis from the top of the right-wing circle. Gladiators forward Colin Vock tied the contest late in regulation tipping a shot from defenseman Shane Sims past Machesney at 16:39. Forward Justin Milo grabbed the second assist.
In the shootout, Machesney stood tall blocking five of six chances and Campbell and Tarkir found the twine to seal the victory. The Stingrays finished the night 0-for-6 on the power play while the Gladiators went 0-for-5.
The Stingrays return to the North Charleston Coliseum Friday, December 16 against the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m.
