Johns Island Fire Dept. alerting residents of phone scam

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The St. Johns Fire Department is alerting the public to a phone scam asking for donations on behalf of the fire department.

According to authorities, someone called the victim around 11 a.m. on Monday. The caller said they were calling on behalf of the St. Johns Fire Department, collecting for the St. Johns Fire Department Children's Burn Unit.

The victim did not fall for the scam and hung up after asking a few questions and after their credit card number was requested.

The St. Johns Fire District says it does not solicit donations for any charity over the phone nor does it accept credit card numbers.

The St. Johns Fire District actively supports the Carolina Children's Charity and the Muscular
Dystrophy Association through a sanctioned collection process which is advertised and also
supports Toys for Tots by acting as collection stations for citizens.

The department is urging all citizens to use caution during the holiday season when donating to charities. Officials say only donate if you know what charity you are donating or take the donation to the charity's authorized donation site.
