Former cadet files suit against The Citadel for hazing

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 21-year-old former Citadel cadet has filed a lawsuit with the military school alleging that he was injured and damaged both physically and mentally from hazings.

James T. Phillips of Newton County, Ga. filed the suit on Dec. 8.

According to the lawsuit, Phillips enrolled in the Citadel as a freshman in Aug. 25, 2009 and shortly thereafter was "improperly and without cause, hazed, physically beaten, threatened and ridiculed."

The lawsuit states that the physical and mental assaults were carried out by other classmates and upper classmen.

The suit goes onto say that "The Citadel was aware or should have been aware of students and groups of students who were not following the rules and policies set out by The Citadel. The Citadel failed to provide a meaningful outlet for students who were affected and therefore, perpetuated the problem."

The suit follows on the heels of the Jefferson and Associates law firm's Wednesday announcement that it has filed a lawsuit against The Citadel on behalf of the mother of a young man who was allegedly sexually abused by suspected child predator Louis "Skip"ReVille on numerous occasions.
