Coroner: Family members left man in ditch to sober up

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) The Florence County Coroner's Office continues to investigate how a man died after a barbeque Tuesday night.

Capt. Mike Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, confirmed to WMBF News Wednesday morning that a body had been found along Heyward Road.

Deputies were informed of the body after a person in the area called 911 upon the discovery.

Nunn said the Florence County Coroner's Office is assisting in the investigation.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews said the body of Clifton Eugene Hill, 50, of Effingham was found in a ditch in the 400 block of Heyward Road. Alcohol was found in his system.

According to Matthews, there seemed to be an altercation between Hill and a family member during the barbeque and Hill ended up in the ditch.

Matthews said family members left Hill to sober up and he was still there Wednesday morning.

The Florence County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate as well and no arrests have been made at this time. Any suspects and arrests are pending the results of an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina.

WMBF News will provide the details of the autopsy as soon as they come in.
