The Charleston Southern men's basketball team received more accolades Monday when the Big South Conference announced that it had swept the weekly player awards. Senior forward Kelvin Martin was named Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week, while freshman guard Arlon Harper earned distinction as the Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week.
As a duo, the two combined to record 66 points, 28 rebounds, 11 steals, nine assists, and five blocks as CSU defeated The Citadel for the third consecutive year before falling to College of Charleston in a tight affair.
Martin posted his third career double-double in the 88-69 win over The Citadel on Wednesday, tallying 13 points while bringing down a career-high tying 17 rebounds to go with three assists, two steals, and a block. The Adel, Georgia native had a quiet first half in the 70-68 loss to the Cougars on Saturday, but spurred CSU's comeback from a 12-point deficit by totaling 14 of his 16 points after halftime. As usual, the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Year filled the rest of the stat line as well with seven rebounds, five steals, three blocks, and two assists.
Harper paced the Bucs in scoring in each intra-city rivalry game and set a career-high for three-point field goals in back-to-back contests. The College Park, Ga. product poured in 19 points versus The Citadel on 7-of-9 shooting, which included a 3-of-4 performance from beyond the arc. He then followed it up with an 18-point outing against College of Charleston, connecting on 4-of-8 from deep while chipping in three assists and two steals.
Harper's classmate and fellow starter in the backcourt, Saah Nimley, won Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season, on December 5.
CSU hits the hardwood one more time before taking a week break for Christmas, as the Bucs travel to DeLand, Fla. to face the Stetson Hatters in a 7 p.m. tipoff. Coverage is set to begin at 6:50 on 106.3 WJNI FM.
