SC Port board halts new Jasper port spending

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - The board overseeing South Carolina's ports says it won't spend any new money on a proposed port in Jasper County until deals are worked out to deepen the Savannah River.

The South Carolina Ports Authority said Tuesday it won't spend new money on the Jasper port until deals are worked out on a number of things including environmental studies and land to be used for the new port.

South Carolina and Georgia have been squabbling for years over plans to expand a Georgia port near Savannah and to build the Jasper facility.

Last month South Carolina's environmental regulation board approved an environmental permit that Georgia needs to deepen the Savannah River so Georgia's port can handle larger ships that will use a deeper Panama Canal.
