AIKEN, SC (WCSC) - One Aiken police officer has been killed and another wounded in a shootout that also sent a suspect to the hospital Tuesday night.
The department says 33-year-old Scotty Richardson was shot in the head during a traffic stop. He leaves behind a wife and three young children.
Police say 28-year-old Officer Travis Griffin was treated and released after a bullet-proof vest saved his life. He has been released from the hospital and is at home with his family.
The suspect in the case was also shot and taken to the hospital.
Lisa Hintz with Aiken Rescue says those at the agency's headquarters heard about a dozen shots.
The State Law Enforcement Division spent much of the night in the area of the crime, trying to figure out what led to the shooting.
Turno says Richardson had been with the department since 1999.
Turno says two other people are being questioned. He says the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating, standard procedure during an officer-involved shooting.
