Former South Carolina catcher Landon Powell was designated for assignment by the Oakland A's on Friday night. The club now has 10 days to decide whether to place him on waivers, trade or release him.
Powell was a 1st round pick of the A's back in 2004 and made his major league debut in 2009. For his career he's hit .207 with 10 HR's and has thrown out almost 40% of attempted base stealers.
The North Carolina native spent 4 years with the Gamecocks helping the team get to the College World Series finals in his freshman year of 2002. He also helped the team reach Omaha two more times and was named to the College World Series Legends team in 2010.
