Netminder Jason Missiaen kicked away all 38 shots and forward Brendan Connolly broke a scoreless tie in the third period to give the Greenville Road Warriors (16-9-1-1) a 2-0 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays (15-13-1-1) at the Bi-Lo Center Tuesday evening.
The Stingrays turned up the pressure in the second period firing 19 shots on Missiaen, but the keeper kept the Rays off the board making several big saves including stops in the crease on Stingrays forward Sean Dolan during a 5-on-3 power play.
The Road Warriors broke the 0-0 tie at 6:24 of the final frame when Connolly lifted a shot over the right shoulder of Stingrays goalie Daren Machesney (L, 26 saves on 28 shots) from between the faceoff circles. Forwards Connor Shields and Sean Berkstresser picked up assists. Forward Brendon Wong sealed the victory for the Road Warriors at 17:23 from forward Brett Robinson and defenseman Francis Meilleur. The Stingrays finished the night 0-for-6 on the man advantage while the Road Warriors went 0-for-3.
The Stingrays wrap up a three-game road trip tomorrow, Wednesday, December 28 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center and return to the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday, December 31 against the Florida Everblades for FIRST Robotics Night presented by Google and a New Year's Eve bash with a postgame balloon drop at 6:05 p.m.
