Assistant principal suing school system alleging bias

BEAUFORT, SC (AP) -

An assistant principal at Shell Point Elementary School is suing the Beaufort school system, claiming she's been repeatedly passed over for promotion because of age and race discrimination.

The Beaufort Gazette reports that 42-year-old Francina Shack says she was also demoted after asking why she was passed over for promotion to a principal's job.

The assistant principal, who is black, says she's been denied promotion six times in favor of younger, white candidates with less experience. She had been working at Hilton Head Island High School before being transferred to Shell Point, which is scheduled to close at the end of this school year.

Beaufort schools superintendent Valerie Truesdale says Shack was not demoted.

The district has until Jan. 17 to respond to the federal lawsuit.
