Clemson student from Mt. Pleasant died of alcohol poisoning

CLEMSON, SC (AP) - Authorities say heavy drinking led to the death of a 19-year-old Clemson University student from Mount Pleasant at an off-campus apartment last month.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley released a toxicology report Thursday confirming that alcohol poisoning killed Tyler Karolczyk on Nov. 12, three days before his 20th birthday.

The report found the freshman had a blood-alcohol level was 0.267 percent, or three times the legal limit to drive.

Karolczyk's roommates found him unresponsive in his bed and he died at the hospital a short time later.

Kelley says Karolczyk wasn't a frequent drinker.

In the weeks after his death, the teen's mother participated in a rally at Clemson to increase awareness of excessive drinking.
