WASHINGTON (RNN) - The world isn't getting any smaller but it may seem like it as the U.S. will start the new year with a population more than 312 million.
The U.S. Census Bureau projected Thursday that America will see population rise .7 percent from last New Year's Day to this one, with an extra 4 million people.
While one birth is expected every 8 seconds in January 2012, one death is expected every 12 seconds.
With the addition of migrant populations, which are expected to add one person to the U.S. population every 46 seconds, the Census predicts that one person will add to population every 17 seconds.
In late October 2011, the world welcomed what was heralded as its 7 billionth person, although when the actual 7 billionth baby will be born is unknown. Predictions from the United Nations claimed the baby would come in 2011, while the U.S. Census Bureau predicts he or she will come in April.
