Man witnesses fatal fire in Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A house fire in northern Berkeley County left one man dead Wednesday morning. Just after sunrise, two men driving along Highway 45 in Pineville witnessed the fire in it's early stages.

"You could see a little bit of fire from the front but you couldn't see through the windows it was real foggy and smoky," said a witness that did not want to be identified.

Berkeley County sheriff's deputies and firefighters responded to the home off Boone Lane in Pineville just after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Two witnesses driving past the home say they saw smoke pouring out both sides of the trailer and called 9-1-1.

"The smoke and all coming was coming from the back and the windows," says another witness. "We were banging on the house to see if somebody was in there. The fire truck pulled up and two of them went in there and they were in there for a couple of minutes before they came out with the body."

Firefighters found the body of a man in the living room, but were not able to revive him.

"They found the gentlemen laying on the ground in the dining room area," says Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. "The inside of the home was gutted."

The State Law Enforcement Division and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office are investigating the cause of the fire and say they will release the name of the victim once his family is notified.

The victim is the first fire death in Berkeley County in 2012.
