The Atlanta Braves have released Stratford and Citadel alum Matt Crim the team confirmed on Thursday. The Pitcher spent the last 3 seasons playing for various teams in the minor leagues after they made him a 21st round draft pick in 2009.
Crim started his professional career with Danville in the Appalachian League in 2009. He went 10-2 with a 3.18 ERA and was named the League's Pitcher of the Year after helping them win the championship.
Since then the former Bulldog has struggled. He spent 2010 in High-A ball with Myrtle Beach going 7-11 with a 4.87 ERA. Most of 2011 was also spent in High-A with Lynchburg where he went 2-8 with a 5.88 ERA, but he also made 3 appearances in Double-A with Mississippi where he was 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA.
Crim spent 4 seasons pitching for The Citadel and posted an 8-4 record and a 4.10 ERA during the 2009 season and finished strong with back-to-back complete game performances, including a complete game shutout of the College of Charleston in the regular season finale and a complete game performance tying a career-best eight strikeouts over Appalachian State in the Southern Conference Tournament.
Crim recorded 62 strikeouts in 83.1 innings pitched in 2009. A four-year weekend starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, Crim finished his career ranked second in career starts, second in innings pitched and tied for third in wins in The Citadel's career record books.
