Cops: Car thief injured after running into fence during police pursuit

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a car thief was injured after running into a barbed wire fence as he tried to run away from police officers in Walterboro.

The Walterboro Police Department charged 21-year-old Gregory Patrick Griffin with motor vehicle theft, failure to stop for blue lights and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

It all started early Friday morning when the victim started his car and returned upstairs to his apartment on Forest Circle.

The victim then heard another vehicle outside and saw a dark suburban outside. The victim told officers that he then saw a man leave the suburban and get into his unlocked Cadillac and drive off.  The victim then called police and a description of the vehicle was sent out.

As the Cadillac pulled onto Bulls Highway, an officer saw the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, police say the driver sped away at a high rate of speed.

According to investigators, at one point, the driver left the vehicle and fled on foot.

A Walterboro police report states, "As the suspect fled, he ran into a barbed wire fence about ten feet off the road causing him to flip over the fence."

Officers say the suspect then regained his footing and ran into the woods. Eventually, a sheriff's deputy was able to locate the suspect who was suffering from minor injuries due to running into the fence.
