The South Carolina Stingrays (15-16-1-1) opened a season-long seven-game road trip Friday night against the Elmira Jackals (21-11-0-0), falling 3-2. Defenseman Johann Kroll and forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien lit the lamp for the Stingrays.
Kroll broke open the scoring on the power play at 12:51 of the first period blasting a shot between the legs of Jackals goaltender Timo Pielmeier (W, 33 saves on 35 shots) from the top of the left-wing circle. Forwards Trent Campbell and Maxime Lacroix earned assists.
The Jackals tied the contest early in the third period when forward Dustin Gazley tapped a loose puck past the right pad of Stingrays netminder Daren Machesney (L, 16 saves on 19 shots) at 4:05. Forward Mike Radja and defenseman Jarrett Rush added assists. Moments later, the Jackals made it 2-1 with a power-play goal from defenseman Mario Larocque at 8:55 with help from forwards Artem Demkov and Jack Downing. O'Brien knotted the contest back up at 13:55 with his team-leading 13th goal of the season from defenseman Zach Tarkir and Lacroix. Jackals forward Louie Caporusso buried the game-winning tally at 17:41 from Radja. The Stingrays ended the night 1-for-7 on the power play while the Jackals went 1-for-4.
The Stingrays square off against the Wheeling Nailers tomorrow, Saturday, January 7 at WesBanco Arena at 7:35 p.m.
