The South Carolina Stingrays (16-16-1-1) scored three third-period goals to defeat the Wheeling Nailers (17-12-1-1) 3-1 at WesBanco Arena Saturday night. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Stingrays.
After a scoreless first period, Nailers forward Mikael Bedard lit the lamp 30 seconds into the second frame beating Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 28 saves on 29 shots) off the left-wing post. Forwards Zach Torquato and Christiaan Minella earned the assists.
Stingrays forward Chris Doyle tied the contest early in the third period beating Nailers goaltender Peter Delmas (L, 23 saves on 26 shots) with a wrist shot under the blocker from between the faceoff circles at 2:33. Forward Danick Paquette grabbed the lone assist. Forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien buried the game-winning tally at 5:31 tapping in a pass from forward Trent Campbell. Forward Maxime Lacroix added the second assist. Campbell sealed the victory at 12:48 from defenseman Brett Flemming and O'Brien. The Stingrays finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play while the Nailers went 0-for-4.
The Stingrays closeout a three-game in three-night weekend tomorrow, Sunday, January 8 against the Toledo Walleye at 4:00 p.m. at the Huntington Center and return to the North Charleston Coliseum Friday, January 20 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. for Dog Days of Winter featuring a Super Weiner Dog Race!
