CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Authorities say when a 14-year-old boy went to a downtown home to fight someone and found no one, he started a fire that damaged five houses and three cars.
The teenager is accused of starting the fire using a cigarette lighter on a home on Nunan Street which spread to other nearby homes and vehicles on Dec. 28.
The boy is charged with four counts of third-degree arson, three counts of malicious injury to real property and five counts of malicious injury to personal property.
Prosecutors say that the teen went to a home on 13 Nunan Street around 9:50 a.m. to fight someone and when he found no one, kicked in the back door. According to court officials, when the boy saw no one was home, he took out a red lighter and set the back door curtains on fire.
Authorities say that the boy then threw the curtain on the couch. The fire then engulfed the home and a nearby house on 11 Nunan Street. According to prosecutors, three other homes and three cars suffered damage from the fire.
The boy was arrested last week and remains in juvenile detention.
