Deputies: Man attempts suicide then tries to jump out of medical helicopter

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Colleton County sheriff's deputies say a 26-year-old man attempted to jump out of a medical helicopter Saturday night after a previous suicide attempt in Walterboro.

Emergency crews found the man lying on his stomach Saturday in the roadway on Interstate 95 near mile marker 60. According to medical personnel on the scene, the man had jumped from a silver Ford Expedition and had suffered a head injury.

The driver of the Expedition told deputies that he, the victim and another man were headed back to Florida after working in Denmark, SC. According to investigators, as the three men were riding in the car, the victim rolled down the back window and attempted to jump out of the window.

The driver said he was traveling around 70 mph when the victim went out of the window. The other passenger grabbed the victim by the shirt, but could not hold onto him. The driver then stopped, located the victim and called 911.

When emergency personnel were transporting the victim by helicopter, authorities say the victim attempted to jump out of the helicopter, which forced the helicopter to make an emergency landing.

A passenger in the Expedition told deputies that the victim made a phone call to Mexico earlier that day and seemed upset afterward. The victim then began to drink beer and continued drinking all day, the passenger said.

The man's condition is unknown at this time. The incident is still under investigation.
