About the Candidate: Gov. Rick Perry was a late arrival to the field of GOP candidates when he entered the race this past summer shortly before the Iowa Straw Poll. Perry hails from Texas where he is a third term governor. Previously, he was the Lone Star State's commissioner of agriculture and lieutenant governor under future President George W. Bush.

Perry was also a captain in the United States Air Force until 1977 where he flew C-130 jets across the world. He returned to Texas to farm with his father until politics came calling in 1984. Perry successfully ran for a seat in the Texas House for three terms. During this time, he also switched parties to become a Republican.
