NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say a 43-year-old man went on a crime spree after slipping into businesses in North Charleston, fooling employees, stealing wallets, checks and credit cards.
Investigators say James Ellis was caught on surveillance cameras and then caught by North Charleston police officers.
Detectives say in one case, the man got through some heavy security. According to investigators, the suspect stole wallets from two workers at a Verizon call center. When all was said and done, police say he stole from at least seven victims.
Investigators say Ellis used the stolen credit cards and checks to buy clothing and high end electronics.
Ellis is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center and is facing close to 40 charges, that include financial transaction card fraud, forgery and burglary.
He was arrested in late December and has been in jail since that time.
