NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say three teenagers were arrested following a traffic stop after officers found drugs and a handgun with a laser targeting system mounted on the barrel.

The North Charleston Police Department charged 17-year-old Dexter Simmons, 17-year-old Kyle Washington and 19-year-old Charles Carmichael with unlawful carrying of a firearm and simple possession of marijuana.

Authorities were on patrol near the Montague extension Thursday afternoon when they saw a white Chevrolet Malibu speeding on Dorchester Road.

When police initiated a traffic stop, investigators say the three teens were seen passing items to the back seat. As an officer approached the driver's side door of the car, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle, according to police.

When Simmons was asked if there were any illegal drugs or weapons in the car, Simmons said that he didn't know.

The officer then ordered the teenagers out of the car and asked Simmons again if there were any drugs or weapons. Simmons told the officer that there was marijuana in the back seat.

Authorities say they found a gym bag in the back seat that contained a clear plastic bag with 15.2 grams of a green plant like material.

A police report states that officers also found a loaded .40 caliber handgun with one bullet in the chamber. A laser light was also mounted underneath the barrel, officers say.
