COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters were busy Sunday in Colleton County as crews worked all afternoon to douse multiple fires.
According to Colleton County Fire and Rescue officials, the first fire was a field fire reported around 11:20 a.m. at 1884 Maple Ridge Road, near the Pleasant Grove Community. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a hay field on fire.
Smoke from the fire could be seen in the Charleston area Sunday afternoon.
Light winds pushed the fire toward multiple barns and farm buildings, threatening the structures. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from damaging the buildings and protected a mobile home on the adjacent property from being destroyed.
The fire destroyed 10 large hay bales and about 5 acres of the field and nearby woods.
The Forestry Commission used a tractor to cut a line around the fire to contain the woods fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Forestry Commission.
Just before noon, fire and rescue officials were notified of a woods fire threatening a structure at 2614 Peniel Road. When units arrived they found a 1-acre area of grass and woods burning under a mobile home on the property.
The fire had already damaged the plastic under-skirting around the mobile home and entered the woods near the structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire at the home, then worked to put out the woods fire.
Officials say the fire originated from an unattended burn barrel on the property. Light winds caused embers from the burning barrel to ignite nearby grass, which spread through the yard.
A second burn barrel incident happened at 13:30 p.m. at 401 Quail Drive. Embers from the barrel ignited grass and several stacks of truck tires behind a garage. The wind caused the fire to spread through the yard until it reached a 28-foot camper stored on the property.
Firefighters found the large camper fully involved and the garage being threatened. Firefighters were able to save the garage, but the tires and camper were destroyed.
Firefighters in Colleton County also battled a house fire Sunday.
