CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say they arrested a man early Sunday morning after he punched a patrolling officer in the chest outside of a King Street bar and grill.

Charleston police arrested 50-year-old Alfred Simmons and charged him with assault on police.

According to police, an officer was walking by AC's Bar and Grill when he noticed Simmons yelling at an unknown group of people. The officer said Simmons "was flexing both of his arms as if he were about to engage in a physical altercation."

The report states that as the officer approached, Simmons first tried to walk away before abruptly turning around and punching him "in the upper chest with one forceful stroke."

Police say Simmons then tried to run away but was detained by nearby officers.  Officers said Simmons, who smelled like he had been drinking, apologized several times while sitting in the back of the patrol car.

He was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.
