ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) - Officers with the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety took drastic action Tuesday to end a hostage situation at a bank on John C. Calhoun Drive.
According to Capt. Mike Adams, the department received a call shortly before 5 p.m. to report an armed robbery in progress at a South Carolina Bank and Trust branch.
Adams says when officers arrived and entered the bank, they found a man holding 15 people hostage. The suspect also held on to one of the hostages by the neck with a knife.
Officers tried negotiations, but Adams says it was "non-productive."
That is when Adams says the officers took the suspect down. It is not known how the suspect was brought down, but he was taken into custody. The hostage has minor injuries.
Investigators are now trying to determine the suspect's identity. He is believed to be in his late 20's or early 30's. Police say he hasn't been cooperative at this point.
Orangeburg police say the suspect has only been hit with an armed robbery charge. However, additional charges are expected.
Police officials will hold a press conference Wednesday at noon to discuss more details about the case.
