SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A 51-year-old man severely injured after being punched in the head at a Summerville bar last week has died.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said James Beatty, of Mt. Pleasant, died at MUSC at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday. Nisbet listed the cause of death as: brainstem herniation, traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhages, and intraparenchymal bleeding.

Deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office responded to Loco Joe's on Miles Road in Summerville just before 11 p.m. on January 10 after reports of an assault. After interviewing witnesses, investigators determined that David Michael Sigler, 40, hit Beatty in the head with his fist.

According to the incident report, Beatty fell to the ground unconscious and struck his head severely on the concrete floor.

Sigler has been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.  The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office issued a statement on Wednesday stating that they "were evaluating upgrading the charges."
