Forward Matt Scherer scored two points (1g, 1a) including the game-winning goal in the third period to help the South Carolina Stingrays (23-16-1-1) to a 3-1 victory over the Florida Everblades (21-17-1-1) in front of 4,223 at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.
The Stingrays jumped on the board first with forward Joe Pereira's third goal of the season at 18:39 of the first period beating Everblades goaltender Billy Sauer (L, 41 saves on 43 shots) with a wrist shot over the glove along the right-wing post. Defenseman Paul Baier and Scherer grabbed assists.
Everblades forward Mathieu Roy tied the contest 3:04 into the second period lifting a backhanded shot past the blocker of Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer(W, 29 saves on 30 shots). Defenseman Kyle Lawson and forward Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll recorded the assists.
Scherer put the Stingrays up for good on the power play at 3:05 of the final period from defenseman Johann Kroll and forward Maxime Lacroix. Forward Mike Hamilton sealed the victory with an empty-net unassisted marker at 19:53. The Stingrays ended the night 1-for-4 on the power play while the Everblades went 0-for-5.
The Stingrays wrap up a three-game in three-night weekend tomorrow, Sunday, January 22 against the Everblades at 4:00 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
