EUTAWVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested a Eutawville man in connection with an early Sunday morning shooting.
Authorities say two men were arguing over a woman inside the Fish Tails Club in Eutawville around 1 a.m. Both men then went outside the club where they got into a fight.
Investigators say the suspect, 62-year-old Oscar Melvin, pulled out a handgun and shot the 28-year-old male victim and then left the club. When deputies arrived on the scene they found the victim surrounded by his friends.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. Investigators were able to locate Melvin at his home in Eutawville and charge him with attempted murder.
"This shooting reaffirms why I directed a great deal of the resources of this agency on investigating and closing night clubs," said Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. "We have responded to this location seven times since 2005 with incidents ranging from thefts to civil disturbances."
The patrons of the club were able to provide deputies with information about the suspect, which helped lead to the arrest.
"It is important that citizens understand we want them to have places to go out and have a good time," Ravenell said. "And it is equally important to us that their lives are not in danger as result."
