NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say the victim of a North Charleston burglary shot one of the two armed intruders in his kitchen Wednesday afternoon. The two suspects then fled the scene in a car, but were pulled over by police and arrested.

The North Charleston Police Department charged 18-year-old Rashaun Dawson with first-degree burglary, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Police also charged 19-year-old Andrew Smalls with first-degree burglary and failure to stop.

Around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to Collins Park Villas in reference to shots fired. As officers were heading in that direction, authorities say they spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Dorchester Road and conducted a traffic stop.

Officers discovered Smalls and Dawson in the car. Police say Dawson was suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to MUSC.

Investigators say they were able to locate the crime scene at Big Ben Court and spoke to the victim. The victim told officers that he was alone sleeping upstairs when he received a phone call from a neighbor.

The neighbor told the victim that two men were dropped off in the front of his home and they were now at the rear breaking in the apartment.

The victim said he went downstairs to investigate and saw two people in his kitchen going through the drawers and cabinets. A police report states that when the two suspects saw him they pointed a gun at the victim and he ran upstairs and got his gun.

According to investigators, the victim went back down stairs, ran out the front door and encountered the suspects again. Police say one of the suspects pointed a gun at the victim so he shot at them, striking Dawson one time.

The victim then jumped in his vehicle and fled the location.

Police say Smalls picked up Dawson, who was injured, and fled the area. The vehicle was then stopped by police a short time later at Dorchester Road and Scarsdale.

No charges are expected to be filed against the victim, but police are still looking for a third suspect.
