North Charleston man gets 12 years for dealing cocaine base

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 25-year-old North Charleston man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for dealing cocaine base.

United States Attorney Bill Nettles said Alvin Grant was sentenced on Thursday in federal court in Charleston. Chief United States District Judge David C. Norton sentenced Grant to 12 years imprisonment followed by six years of supervised release.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that on Sept. 13 and Oct. 1, 2010, the North Charleston Police Department Narcotics Unit made undercover purchases of  crack cocaine from Grant.

Grant's prior record includes multiple drug and weapons convictions, as well as a conviction for assault and battery with intent to kill.

The undercover purchases were part of Operation S.T.A.N.D., a joint initiative between the North Charleston Police Department, the United States Attorney's Office and the Charleston County Solicitor's Office.
