CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Detention Center was locked down briefly Monday after officials say a fire suppressant was accidentally released.
The North Charleston Fire Department responded to the jail around 10:40 a.m. and found that the fire suppression system had discharged in the facility's central control room. The room controls all doors, cameras and security equipment.
Fire officials say after a thorough investigation no fire was found and the facility suffered no damage.
Officials say that the system has been reset and operations in the center have returned to normal. The jail was back to normal operations within 45 minutes.
No employees or inmates were injured and officials say there was never a risk of escape and the public safety was never compromised.
