CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Reverse 911 sends out a warning to residents when they are far from the television and an Internet connection.

"If there's a hazardous materials event or if there's a kidnapping in the area some type of major event where we need to get the message out to the public. That's when we use that system," said Jim Lake, director of the Charleston County Consolidated 911 Center.

But if you only use a cell phone you may not get the call. Only landline phone numbers automatically go into Charleston County's reverse 911 system.

Registration is free, but few cell phone users seem to be taking advantage of it.

"Especially when you take into light that 80 percent of our 911 calls are from cell phones and not from landline phones," Lake said. "It's another growing trend that people are getting rid of landline phones and using cell phones. We should see a high number of cell phones registered and we just don't see that."

According to Lake cell phone users can remove their information whenever they choose.

Charleston County uses its reverse 911 system about six times a year.
