WADMALAW ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters worked to contain a 3-acre brush fire Tuesday that was caused by the exhaust pipe of a tractor on Wadmalaw Island.
Units from the St. Johns Fire and Rescue Department, St. Paul's Fire Department and City of Charleston Fire Department responded to calls from residents around 11:30 a.m.
St. Johns Captain James T. Ghi said high winds caused the blaze, which burned along a section of Maybank Highway, to spread rapidly in the tall grass.
The fire was contained before it could reach any buildings or homes.
Ghi also said the fire was started by the exhaust pipe on a tractor that was cutting the tall grass.
The tractor operator was slightly injured, but did not require any medical attention, Ghi said.
Elsewhere in Charleston County, firefighters responded to a fire off Highway 17 in Awendaw, however, that turned out to be a debris fire in someone's back yard.
