The South Carolina Stingrays (27-18-1-1) fell 4-3 to the Cincinnati Cyclones (20-14-0-6) at U.S. Bank Arena Friday night, snapping a seven-game road winning streak. Forward Trent Campbell(2g) and defensemen Johann Kroll (1g, 1a) and Brett Flemming (2a) each recorded two points in the loss.
Cyclones forward Michael Pelech grabbed the opening goal 54 seconds into the second period lifting a rebound over the blocker of Stingrays goaltender Philipp Grubauer (L, 20 saves on 24 shots) from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Taylor Aronson and forward Joe Devin recorded assists. Campbell tied the contest at 10:47 beating Cyclones keeper Brad Fogal (W, 30 saves on 33 shots) under the blocker. Kroll picked up the lone helper. Moments later, Campbell made 2-1 from forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Flemming at 15:09.
With eight seconds left in the period, Cyclones rookie Matthew Sisca knotted the contest back up on the power play from forward Mathieu Aubin and blueliner Maury Edwards.
The Cyclones quickly jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the third period behind two power-play tallies. Winger Robert Slaney made it 3-2 at 1:45 from forwards Jonathan Hazen and Pelech. Former StingrayDan Eves buried his second goal of the season at the 3:53 marker from Hazen and Slaney. Kroll pulled the Stingrays back within one on the man advantage blasting a pass from forward Mike Hamilton over the right pad of Fogal from the left-wing circle. Flemming received the second assist. The Stingrays ended the contest 1-for-3 on the power play while the Cyclones went 3-for-5.
The Stingrays wrap up a three-game road trip tomorrow, Saturday, February 4 against the Cyclones at 7:35 p.m. at U.S. Bank Arena and return to the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday, February 7against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m.
