WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that occurred on Interstate 95 in Walterboro around midnight on Saturday that injured nine people.
Troopers say two cars collided near the 55 mile marker, northbound on I-95. Those cars veered into the path of an 18-wheeler causing it to run off the road. The semi crashed into several trees then flipped over and burst into flames. The semi driver was able to escape the flames and wasn't hurt.
Nine other people were injured in the accident, but not seriously hurt. Eight of them went to the hospital.
The Northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about three hours as police and fire crews cleaned up the scene.
The refrigerated trailer of the semi broke apart, spilling fresh vegetable along the roadside.
Highway patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
