Charity co-founder pleads guilty in Torah fraud charges

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A charity co-founder who claimed he traveled the world to rescue Torahs pleaded guilty to fraud charges.

Menachem Youlus brought a Torah to downtown's Sholom Beth Israel synagogue in 2009 to restore it. Youlus claimed that he got the vintage Torah scrolls from all over Europe and Israel.

Lawyers say he distributed the Torahs he bought from U.S. dealers to synagogues and congregations across the country at inflated rates defrauding the charity he founded and its donors out of more than $800,000.
