WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police officers were responding to the robbery of an 85-year-old woman with cancer Monday when they stumbled upon a man in possession of a pound of marijuana.

While investigating a strong arm robbery on Wapoo Road involving an elderly woman Monday afternoon, police saw a man matching the description of the suspect running down Huntley Drive.

Charleston police seized a pound of marijuana from the suspect at the intersection of Opal Avenue and Huntley Drive. Officers charged 27-year-old Emeka Swain, of Skinner Avenue, with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Swain is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center.

During the strong arm robbery investigation around 2:15 p.m., police say they spotted a man, later identified as Swain, running down Huntley Drive. A police officer ordered him to stop and he complied.

The officer then noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from Swain. During a search, the officer found a pound of marijuana in the man's backpack, a police report states. The marijuana has a street value of almost $2,900.

Police say Swain isn't a suspect in the strong arm robbery at this time. The investigation into the strong arm robbery is ongoing. Police say in that case, a man got into a battle over a purse with an 85-year-old woman. He ripped the purse in half and made off with the cash inside.
