Petitions emerge in defense of Charleston County sheriff

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - One day after an online petition calls for the Charleston County sheriff to resign for his handling of a high speed chase, two new petitions emerge supporting him.

The new petitions on are for keeping the sheriff while another is asking for support for the deputies.

The author of "Keep Sheriff Al Cannon as sheriff of Charleston County" says Cannon's actions are not enough for him to resign or be forced out.

He goes on to say, "We support you sheriff and keep up the good work!"

Those who signed a petition calling for Cannon to resign said he was unfit for the job and that he lied to the community about what happened after the chase on Jan. 30.

At first, he claimed the suspect, Timothy McManus, ran and was chased down by a police dog. But dash camera video shows Charleston deputies punching McManus and using a dog on him.
