GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Commuters traveling into and out of Georgetown County Thursday morning were at a standstill as several victims were transported to the hospital following a four car pile-up on Highway 17.
Bob Beebe with the Midland Fire Department reports that north and southbound lanes of Hwy 17 between the bridges connecting Georgetown and the Waccamaw Neck were closed for about an hour.
The traffic delays began after a car stopped to avoid debris in the road, causing a back-up and then a domino effect of crashes. In total Beebe says eight victims were transported to the hospital and four cars crashed, two catching fire.
The crash completely closed the bridge for about one hour Thursday morning. The southbound lane of traffic was cleared just before 9 a.m. Northbound traffic continues to experience some delays and drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.
