Man arrested in high-speed chase with sheriff asks for reduced bond

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The lawyer representing a driver arrested after a high-speed chase with the Charleston County sheriff is asking for his bond to be reduced.

Timothy McManus is charged with failing to stop for police and resisting arrest after deputies say he led them on a chase from Mt. Pleasant to Awendaw. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.

On Thursday, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon wrote a letter to the State Law Enforcement Division asking for an external investigation into whether the sheriff's office broke any laws during the chase.

In a letter to SLED, the sheriff writes that because he is personally involved he wants another agency to investigate.

This past week an online petition called for the sheriff to resign following the release of the videos. A day after the petition came out, two new petitions emerged supporting him.

In the video you see the driver being taken to the ground and punched. The suspect has been arrested several times in the past.
