The South Carolina Stingrays (28-20-1-1) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Express (22-18-5-2) at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday evening. The Stingrays finished 2-0-0-0 against the Express this season.
Stingrays forward Joe Pereira kicked off the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 3:18 of the first period beating Express goaltender Peter Mannino (L, 26 saves on 29 shots) past the left pad from the bottom of the right-wing circle. Forwards Matt Scherer and Josh Turnbull earned assists. Moments later, defenseman Derek Keller made it 2-0 at 4:48 from forward Tyler Shelast.
The Express cut the lead in half with a power-play tally from forward Tyler Donati at 5:07 of the middle period. Donati slipped a shot past the left leg of Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 26 saves on 28 shots) off the right post. Defenseman Scott Wietecha and forward Maxime Gratchev recorded assists. Stingrays defenseman Zach Tarkir reclaimed a two-goal lead on the man advantage at 12:27 from forward Trent Campbell and defenseman Nick Tabisz.
Express forward Aaron Marvin pulled it back within one at 12:26 of the final frame from Gratchev and forward Chaz Johnson. The Stingrays ended the night 1-for-4 on the power play while the Express when 1-for-1.
The Stingrays celebrate Matt Scherer Bobblehead Night presented by SAIC tomorrow, Saturday, February 11 against the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. Bobbleheads are available to the first 1,000 fans. Saturday is also Wounded Warriors Night presented by SAIC and fans can meet and take photos with SpongeBob SquarePants!
