WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a man this week they say chased another man around with a baseball bat and punched him repeatedly in the face after barging into his ex-girlfriend's home.

Charleston Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance last Friday in an apartment complex on North Avalon Circle just after 10 a.m.  When they arrived, a neighbor told them that all three people, one woman and two men, involved in the incident had vacated the scene.

Police put vehicle descriptions out over the radio, and a man and woman were pulled over on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard a short time later.

The man and woman told officers that 34-year-old Johnathan Alston, who used to live with the female victim at the North Avalon Circle home until recently, barged in through the front door and began arguing with her.  The male victim locked himself in the bathroom, but he said Alston broke down the bathroom door and punched him repeatedly in the face before the victim could make it out of the house, the report states.

The female victim said Alston then followed the man out of the house and chased him around the parking lot.  She told police she brought a baseball bat outside to defend herself and diffuse the situation, but Alston snatched it from her and began swinging it at the male victim.

Police said the male victim was suffering from a swollen right eye.  EMS responders took him to Roper St. Francis where he received stitches.

Investigators arrested Alston early Thursday and charged him with criminal domestic violence.  He is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
